Our curriculum intent is to develop a love of learning through meaningful, engaging and creative learning experiences. We aspire to enable each child to become an active member of our school and the wider community. We plan our curriculum based on knowledge being used to develop skill to ensure pupils make progress. We aim to prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of their journey through life in the example of Christ. The National Curriculum is an important element of this. The curriculum at SS Peter and Paul is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children. It provides opportunities for our children to become independent, confident learners with high aspirations who know how to make positive contributions to the wider community. We want our pupils to be able to retain knowledge and gain transferable skills to support their next steps in education. A primary focus of our curriculum is to identify children’s interests but to also identify their barriers to learning in the community we serve.

Curriculum design
At SS Peter and Paul, we have strategically planned our curriculum to meet the needs of our community. We believe that the topics we teach will enthuse and inspire our children, developing them as individuals to ensure they make excellent progress from their starting points. Our rich and vibrant curriculum aims to develop specific skills which can be seen across the school throughout all subject areas. As a team we have created long term plans which ensure progression within a context. Teachers then use this to create medium term plans and short term plans where they highlight learning objects, key vocabulary, assessment opportunities and clear differentiation to ensure all of our teaching is carefully tailored to meet the needs to all children.
Teaching and Learning
Through teaching, we aim to encourage pupils to be independent, resilient and able to face problems positively. We expect pupils to try their best in all lessons, to achieve all that they deserve. We do this by providing modelling, through careful questioning, through planned collaboration and through effective feedback.
Teachers support one another too. Through regular monitoring, evaluation and review, we aim to continually adapt and evolve teaching and learning according to the needs and wellbeing of our pupils. We work closely with other schools in our Academy and with specialist Local Authority teams in order to share good practice.
Assessment
In each subject, teachers build a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding, taking account of every individual’s need through careful assessment, so to identify and address any misconception, embed and use knowledge fluently and move on learning. We ensure that the children are regularly assessed, using formative and summative assessments, against the relevant framework and objectives across the breadth of the curriculum. Strategies used will vary according to the subject and learning objective taught. Teachers use a range of live ‘in the moment’ feedback and next step marking to move learning forward.
Impact
We strive to ensure that our children’s attainment in core and foundation subjects is in line with or exceeding their age related expectations when we consider the varied starting points of children.
The impact will be that our learners will have fully rounded characters with a clear understanding of complex values like equality, friendship, trust and many others. They will have a strong spiritual knowledge and faith based upon our mission statement and Catholic ethos.
Our pupils will gain a strong web of knowledge from across the curriculum subjects which can be transferred from one context to another. They will have the ability to retrieve knowledge and make connections between subjects and apply their skills, and they will be able to apply their knowledge to solve problems and not be afraid to make mistakes.
